Do Lip Injections Hurt?

Lip injections are a type of cosmetic treatment that is used to enhance the appearance of the lips. Their main purpose is to add volume and definition to the lips and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines around the mouth.

Given how effective lip injections are, they have become all the rage today, and have received endorsements from celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Anna Faris, and Snooki, who have popularized their use.

Do Lip Injections Hurt Continued

Despite how popular lip fillers have become, many people have misconceptions about how they work. Images of massive needles and cringing patients are the first things that come to mind when they hear the words “lip filler.”

In fact, we often get asked, “Do lip injections hurt?”

The answer is, yes they do…but fortunately, not too much.

When you get your lips filled, you will experience a small amount of discomfort and a slight stinging sensation, both of which pass quickly. Some people also experience a sharp, unpleasant pinch. But if a local anesthetic is used, you might not even feel much of anything.

Although there is some pain with the procedure, lip injections are non-invasive and are generally safe, making them a great alternative to lip augmentation surgery.

Why Might You Want To Get a Lip Injection?

There are many reasons why people might want to get a lip injection. Some people might feel that their lips are too thin and they want them to be fuller.

Others might have lost volume in their lips over time and want to regain that youthful look.

And finally, some people might just like the way lip injections make their lips look and feel.

Another common reason we see for why people get lip injections is that lip volume can decrease with age, the use of certain medications, and with hormonal changes.

In these instances, people who feel that their lips are less get lip injections to make their lips look fuller and more youthful, and they can also make them feel softer and smoother.

They soon find out that lip injections are a quick, easy, and relatively painless way to get the perfect pout.

What Are Safe Ways To Increase Your Lips Volume?

There are a variety of safe and effective ways to increase your lips volume. These include collagen, hyaluronic acid, or autologous fat injections, which increase your lip’s volume without the need for surgery or long recoveries.

Collagen is a natural protein that helps keep your skin looking smooth and elastic. When injected into your lips, collagen can help give them a fuller appearance. Collagen injections are a quick and easy way to achieve fuller lips without the need for surgery.

Hyaluronic acid, meanwhile, is a natural substance that helps keep your skin hydrated. When injected into your lips, hyaluronic acid can help make them look fuller and smoother. Hyaluronic acid injections typically require little recovery time, making them a popular choice for those looking to increase their lip volume.

Lastly, autologous fat injections use the patient’s own fat to plump up the lips. First, the fat is liposuctioned from another part of the body – typically the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks, where fat is plentiful. Then, it is injected into the lips using a small needle. The procedure is relatively simple and can be done in a doctor’s office. Recovery time is minimal, and results are usually quite natural-looking.

Are There Unsafe Ways To Increase Your Lips Volume?

Most certified methods of increasing your lips volume are safe. However, there are two things you should beware of if you are looking to increase your lips volume: unlicensed practitioners and uncertified lip enhancement methods.

Unlicensed practitioners may not have the necessary training to perform procedures safely and may not use sterile equipment or follow proper sanitation procedures. This could lead to infection or other complications.

Additionally, the regulation around uncertified lip enhancement methods is, in our opinion, somewhat murky, so it’s impossible to know whether or not every procedure is safe. In some cases, harmful methods may even cause long-term damage to your lips.

With all this in mind, if you’re considering increasing your lip volume, be sure to consult with a qualified physician who has experience in this area, such as Dr. Brian Levine, the Medical Director of Mirror Mirror Med Spa in Los Angeles.

Only then can you make an informed decision about what is best for you.

Different Types of Lip Fillers

The type of filler used for your lips will depend on your individual needs and wants. Some fillers are better for adding volume, while others are better for treating lines and wrinkles. There are many different types of lip fillers, such as Juvéderm Ultra and Restylane Refyne.

Juvéderm Ultra is a hyaluronic acid filler that is used to add volume to the lips. It is a long-lasting filler that can keep your lips full for up to 18 months. Juvéderm Ultra is a good choice for treating fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.

Restylane Refyne is another hyaluronic acid filler that is used to add volume to the lips. It is a newer filler that has been shown to be more forgiving than other fillers when it comes to facial expressions.

Overall, it is important to note that not all fillers are alike, which makes choosing the right one for your needs potentially difficult. The good news is that we are here to help you find the filler that is best for your situation.

Do Lip Injections Hurt With Numbing Cream?

No, it doesn’t.

If you’re worried about your lip injection being too painful, you’ll be happy to know that we use a topical numbing cream before getting started. The cream we use takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes to take full effect, during which time we do our best to make you comfortable.

Do Lip Injections Hurt With Local Anesthetic?

Other than the mild sting of the anesthetic needle, no, your lip injection shouldn’t hurt.

If you’re concerned about the use of an anesthetic needle, speak with your treatment provider prior to receiving treatments, as some medical spas use local anesthetics rather than numbing creams.

While using a local anesthetic is certainly a viable option, it will also cause your lips to swell and make it harder for the nurse to apply the lip filler correctly.

Ultimately, local anesthetics are more complicated than numbing creams. This is why we, like many other medical spas, prefer numbing creams in most cases.

What to Expect During Lip Injections

The first step to getting a lip injection is your treatment consultation, during which we’ll go over important information regarding your health and what you can expect during your procedure.

The second step is preparing you for treatment. We do so by applying a numbing cream or local anesthetic to your treatment area and waiting until the area is completely numb.

Once the area has been sufficiently anesthetized, the third step is applying the filler. We use a small needle for this purpose. After we’ve added volume to your treatment area, we massage the spot to smooth it out.

The entire process takes 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

Recovery Time: When Can You Go Back to Your Normal Routine?

As we mentioned earlier, lip injections are a popular way to achieve fuller lips without surgery. Since no surgery is involved, there is no downtime required for recovery. You can return to your normal routine immediately after treatment, which is a huge plus!

With that said:

Some people may experience some minor swelling and bruising after their injection. How long these symptoms last depend on the type of lip injection you receive and your individual body chemistry.

Generally speaking, however, if there is any minor swelling and bruising, these will dissipate quickly. At most, all of these minor side effects subside within a few days.

Even if you do not experience significant swelling or bruising, it is best to wait a few days before returning to your normal activities. For example, it is important to avoid strenuous exercise and drinking alcohol for the first few days after getting lip injections.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.

Do Lip Injections Hurt—Side Effects of Lip Injections

The side effects of lip injections include bruising, swelling, pain, and infection. In more serious cases, lip injections can also leave scars, bumps, or lumps in the treated area. And yes, these can hurt!

To ensure you have a safe and successful treatment, please consult with a medical professional. Our Medical Director, Dr. Brian Levine MD, is available if you’d like to speak with him.

Results: What Can You Expect After Getting Lip Injections?

It is natural to be curious about the results you can expect after getting lip injections. A recent study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal sought to answer this question by polling several patients who had undergone lip injections.

The results indicated that the average patient saw an increase of 2.5 points on the Merz Aesthetic Scale, which rates the appearance of lips. Additionally, the majority of patients (72%) reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their results.

While these figures may not be applicable to every individual, they provide a general idea of what to expect after getting lip injections. The best way to find out what to expect is to consult with a doctor who has experience performing lip injections.

Regarding results: How long the results last depends on a variety of factors, including the type of product used and the individual’s lifestyle and diet. It is important to remember that lip injections are not a permanent solution and that periodic touch-ups will likely be necessary in order to maintain the desired effect.
